WHAT IS CONSTIPATION? 4 WAYS TO CURE IT

Constipation

Constipation is a condition in which you find it extremely difficult or impossible to pass stool, usually for a few days. There are many known reasons why one can be constipated — ranging from neural problems to colon problems etc, but the commonest cause of constipation is the insufficiency of liquid in the body.

When we eat, the nutrients in the foods are extracted by the body, and then, the remaining part (waste) is sent to the colon, where it is passed through the anus as stool. For the colon to stay in good condition, and work well, it needs to be hydrated adequately. In the absence of enough liquid, what the colon does is extract the liquid content in your stool to keep itself hydrated, before pushing it down the anus— and without enough liquid content in stool, the resulting effect is usually constipation. So now that we know what constipation is and what causes it, how can we get rid of it?

 

1. Drink lots of water, before, in- between and after meals. Since it’s been established that the inadequacy of liquid content in our body is the commonest reason for constipation, it is only normal that enough water would have an opposite effect. Drink lots and lots of water every day— at least, 6 to 8 normal sized glasses a day will do the trick. Drink water before you eat, and after you eat, to help soften the food. You’ll probably urinate a little more than usual, but don’t worry about it. Water is good for your health in more ways than you know.

2. Drink olive oil and lemon juice (optional). Drinking one tablespoon of olive oil in the morning, before you eat anything else can help cure constipation. If you forget to take it in the morning, wait till later in the day when your food would have digested because it works better on an empty stomach. You can add lemon juice to the olive oil to make it taste good or take the lemon juice on its own, as it also works alone.

3. Drink fresh lemon, mixed with warm water. Squeeze the juice off a fresh lemon into a glass of warm water, and drink it each morning before breakfast.

4. Eat lots of fibre. Fibre rich foods are a good cure for constipation. Eating them can help a lot. Some fibre- rich foods include Beans, nuts, potatoes, Berries, Apricot, etc.

 

Like I mentioned earlier, constipation can also be caused by other factors in the body. If you have other major symptoms, coupled with constipation, or have been constipated for longer than a week, please, consult a doctor for proper exam.
