6 MAJOR CAUSES OF DARK CIRCLES AROUND YOUR EYES

dark circles

A lot of people have serious concern about dark circles around their eyes, or periorbital circles if you may. But what really are periorbital dark circles anyways?

Periorbital dark circle isn’t just what you think it is, it’s the area that show more blood vessels and blood they contain more than any part of the body. The skin covering that area is less thick than every part of your body, so the dark circles you see are a reflection of the blood vessels just below that thin layer of skin.

People have blamed stress, heat from the sun, inadequate and poor sleep and a host of other factors as the causes of dark circles; while these might not be far off from the truth, there are so many other important factors to consider as regards periorbital dark circles.

1. GENES / HEREDITARY

Periorbital dark circles are as well hereditary, they could even be found in little children, this is mostly as a result of hereditary.

2. AGE

As the human body ages, periorbital dark circles could become more obvious. The skin loses its elasticity as age steps in, and this would result in the periorbital area getting thinner, meaning bolder periorbital dark circles.

3. ILLNESS, ALLERGIES AND EXCESSIVE SALT CONSUMPTION

Illness such as nasal congestion can also cause dark circles around the eye, it could dilate the blood vessels around the eye causing them to darken. Excessive salt intake could mean your body would have more fluids than needed; this could cause an increased pressure on the skin, forcing the blood vessels to the surface of the skin.

4. SLEEP

Lack of sleep and excessive sleep can cause periorbital dark circles. This is the most common cause of periorbital dark circles.

5. PERIORBITAL HYPERPIGMENTATION

This is a condition in which the skin produces more melanin below the eye. Excessive exposure to the sun could make the body produce more melanin. This is mostly common among people with darker skin.

6. ANAEMIA

In serious conditions like anaemia where iron deficiency could make the blood transport less oxygen to the eye tissues, dark circles would be evident.

Excessive smoking, alcohol and crying can also contribute to having periorbital dark circles.
