5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID OFFICE ROMANCE

Love and attraction are some of the things we can’t always control. You can control what you eat, where you go, and a lot of other things, but who you are attracted to — that is difficult, and it is so because we cannot control our emotions. Sometimes, the heart just wants what it wants, but even then, I think some things are better avoided, even if it is to the detriment of your immediate satisfaction and joy.

Office romance is a subject that has continued to draw reactions and opinions from people across spheres of living. Some think it is good, others think it isn’t, but while you cannot entirely say that it is bad to date someone you work in the same office with, I think there are a few bad sides to it that are worth mentioning. Here they are…

 

1. CLASH OF PRIORITIES

You have a job that you want to try so hard to keep, but then, there in your office is that person whom you’re romantically involved with; how do you think you can manage to juggle between doing your official duties and making time for the special someone? Or do you think you can pretend to not notice them all day and do your job smoothly? Lol. You’d agree with me that is isn’t an easy thing to do, because you do not want to lose your job, and you do not want to make your partner feel under-appreciated. So you find that you’re torn between taking care of both priorities in your life. But imagine a situation where you work in different offices/locations, such a problem wouldn’t come up because you know that at work, you have nothing else to think about except work; your partner can get to have all the time he/she wants with you after the close of work.

2. THE RELATIONSHIP MAY BE BLAND

For most people, the spice of a relationship is that yearn you feel when you don’t see your partner for days or weeks, and the consequent excitement you get when you eventually see them. So you can imagine how this sort of people would feel in an office romance; there’ll be no excitement, and no yearning because they would practically see each other at the office on a daily basis, and after a while, feelings may begin to wane, and when that happens, the relationship is guaranteed to fail. So you find that most people tend to avoid office romance because of this reason.

3. YOU HAVE LITTLE OR NO PRIVACY IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Unless you can manage to keep it a secret, when you date someone you work in the same office with, your relationship is as good as a public affair, and for that, you’ll have just about anyone and everyone trying to pry into it, spin rumours or make uninvited suggestions to your relationship. That can be annoying, and can ruin a relationship, unless you and your partner can manage to pay deaf ears to side talk.

4. IT COULD COST EITHER OF YOU YOUR JOB

When you spend more time with your love interest than you do doing your job, how do you think your employer would feel, Happy? Yea right. Oh and imagine that you have a problem with your partner and you’re expected to work together for the good of your employer, would you be able to handle the situation maturely? If yes, then that’s good (which is very difficult, by the way), but if not, the consequences would be tough — could even lead to the loss of your job(s).

5. IT BREEDS JEALOUSY

In an office setting where you usually have lots of people having to work together for the benefit of the company or organization, you may find it hard to deal with when a particular female or male starts to be ‘too close’ to your partner; and when that happens, jealousy might take over you, and that is unhealthy for any relationship.

 

So you’ve seen the cons of office romance, but like I said, it’s just a side to it, there are people who have had it good from it, and have even gone on to have successful marriages from it, so, it’s only a question of whether you can handle it. If you can, good, but if not, simply stay away from it.
