If you are in a serious relationship with your partner or already engaged, there are certain things you should know before getting married.

People get eager to get married without actually preparing for being married. Not every couple remain satisfied after five years into their marriage, and that’s a cause for concern.

There are some important things research has found that you can actually learn from.

1. KNOW WHERE YOU STAND FINANCIALLY

Finance is one aspect that many couples shy away from until they get married and this is very risky. One study found that almost 80% of couples who divorce cite financial debt as a reason. Couples should know where each other stand financially before getting married. Debts, source of income and every other important financial information should be made known so that it won’t lead to hiccups when finally married.

2. HOW YOU TALK

How you talk when married is also important. According to a research published in the journal Psychology and aging, couples who use couple-focused words such as “we” and “us” during conflicts tend to have better affection for each other and less anger. While words like ‘I” and “me” was linked to marital dissatisfaction.

3. LEARN TO LAUGH AND SHARE JOKES WITH EACH OTHER

It’s also important for couples to have a good sense of humour. Recent research has shown that couples with better sense of humour have fewer symptoms of physical illness than those who don’t.

4. SLEEP PATTERNS

A 2010 study by researchers from University of Pittsburgh found that couples who have similar sleep patterns reported higher satisfaction in their marriage. They had more sex, spent more time together and had less conflicts than couples with different sleep patterns. The study was published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

5. MORE SEX WOULD HELP YOUR MARRIAGE

Research has shown that lovemaking is highly important in marriage and couples who have an active sex life have a boost in their general well-being.

6. NUMBER OF CHILDREN

The number of children should also be agreed by both partners and the finance of taking care of those kids should be taken into cognizance. When finance is poor and there are too many kids to be taken care of, the marriage would most likely be an unhappy one.
