Oil leakage is common with cars and automobiles, and they can be very harmful for your vehicle if not detected and handled in time. Most people, especially new car owners see traces of leaking oil, but often have no idea where it’s coming from.
Well, here are some of the major causes of oil leakage in vehicles.
DAMAGED ENGINE CASKET
An engine casket is a seal placed in between two metal parts in an engine. They are usually meant to join these metal parts together, but over time, they can become damaged if exposed to engine oil sludge.
DAMAGED OIL PAN
Oil pans become damaged over time due to bad roads and debris. Continued exposure to such conditions can cause dent and holes in the pan, thereby creating leakage.
BAD OR WORN OUT DRAIN PLUG
The drain plug in the oil pan can become worn out or damaged over time if it continually suffers trauma from hard objects. When this happens, oil begins to escape the Pan. A common sign of a bad drain plug is that it is usually covered in fresh oil.
THE OIL FILLER CAP
When the filler cap, which covers the engine oil compartment, becomes loose, broken or missing, the oil is likely to spill out while the vehicle is running, and it will continue to drip after the car is stopped.
EXPIRED OIL FILTER
Oil filters wear out or become loose or misaligned over time. The oil filter is used to remove carbon and other impurities created by the combustion process. This filter is subject to oil pressure supplied by the oil pump and will leak if the filter is loose or the seal from the old oil filter is still on the block which can surface well after the oil change has been done. Use a flashlight to check the oil filter for a leak, if you notice any, wipe the area clean and recheck the leak after a short time.
