We all have to agree that marriage is a different ball game from relationships; marriage is a much more serious and committed affair. With this knowledge, this makes having a best friend in a member of the opposite sex quite a dicey one.

It’s not really wrong to have someone in the opposite sex as a best friend; after all, your best friend is your most preferred friend that totally understands you and have been there for you probably even before your partner came along the picture — but this doesn’t make it an entirely comfortable situation.

You might be honest in your relationship with that your best friend that’s a member of the opposite the sex, but it all boils down to how it affects your marriage.

There are three major things to consider in this situation that would determine how simple or difficult this situation would be.

First, has the relationship always been platonic? This is a major reason why people are scared when their spouse’s best friend is a member of the opposite sex. Some best friends in this situation have had moments that crossed boundaries of just being purely platonic. In this situation, it would definitely not be easy for the partner.

Secondly, does your best friend take the place of your partner? If you have a best friend in the opposite sex and that person takes the place of your partner in many things then it could be termed wrong as it would definitely affect your marriage. There ought to be set boundaries in this situation.

Finally, your partner ought to feel comfortable with the situation and trust that the relationship is right. When your partner distrusts your relationship with your best friend or is uneasy with it then this could pose a problem.

These three factors should be highly scrutinized before terming having a best friend that’s a member of the opposite sex right or wrong. But, in general, it’s not wrong to have a best friend in the opposite sex even when married; it’s your approach or attitude that matters most.

Do you think it’s okay to have a best friend in the opposite sex? And would you find it comfortable if you were the other partner?
