According to a leading celebrity dermatologist Dr Neetu Nirdosh, “only 20 percent of the way you age is down to generation factors.”

This means we are in control of the other 80 percent.

So if you want a great skin, below are 9 rules you should follow

1. Avoid diets high in sugar and high-glycemic index carbohydrates such as white rice, bread and sweets. Foods high in sugar and high-glycemic index carbohydrates cause inflammation in the body that can make the skin age quicker.

2. Reduce your intake of dairy products as a diet high in dairy may elevate hormone levels and contribute to inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

3. Go for all types of berries because berries are high in antioxidants that bring great anti-ageing benefits to the skin.

4. Eat your water as this helps your body retain water better.  Go for foods with high water content like watermelon, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, apricots, pomegranates and avocados.

5. Eat foods with good fats such almonds, avocados, walnuts and oily fish.

6. Eat more tomatoes because it has skin-protective benefits due to its lycopene content.

7. Don’t eat after 7pm as the body needs to release anti-aging hormones for repair at night and eating too late causes it to release insulin which negatively affects skin. This is according to Dr Neetu Nirdosh in a Healthista report.

8. Eat lean proteins such as beef, lamb, chicken and fish and reduce your starchy, grain-based foods even the brown versions.

9. Eat plenty of vegetables.
