Marriage is a beautiful thing, and the beauty of marriage goes beyond the fancy wedding dress and wonderful piece of suit, it’s more than the dance and the fanfare that surrounds a wedding. It goes beyond the glamour, and saying “I do” is more than just a phrase; these are some of the things they signify:
1. IT’S A VOW
Saying “I do” is more than a phrase; it’s a vow and an oath to spend the rest of your days with that person, come what may. When you understand that a vow isn’t mere words, you wouldn’t just rush into marriage and you will say those words with understanding.
2. IT’S A COMMITMENT
Saying “I do” is a commitment; when you make this vow, you commit yourself to be there for that person no matter what. Saying you do means you have committed your life to each other.
3. IT’S A NEW FAMILY
While you still have your old family, saying “I do” means you have agreed to have a new family with that man/woman, and this new family should be your priority.
4. YOU COMMIT YOUR BODIES
Saying “I do” also means you have agreed to commit your bodies to each other. Committing your bodies to each other means you aren’t the sole owner of your own body anymore, someone shares it now with you.
5. YOU SHARE IN THE PERSON’S STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES
When you say “I do”, you agree to share in that person’s strength and weakness. And it’s your duty to bring strength to your partner’s flaws and further add to their strength.
6. YOUR FUTURES ARE INTERTWINED
When you say “I do”, you become not only part of your partner’s present but your partner’s future as well. Both your future become intertwined; so you should no longer see it as “my future” but “our future”.
7. YOU HAVE TO LET GO OF THE PAST
In saying “I do” you should understand that you have agreed to let go of your partner’s past and everything is starting anew. The past is gone and a tomorrow is being created.
