6 WAYS TO HANDLE A ‘WICKED BOSS’

bad boss

Do you have a boss that makes life impossible for you? A boss that drives you crazy? The one who makes you hate every work day. Such bosses exist in almost every workplace, and their attitude makes subordinates tag them as ‘wicked boss’.

But every so-called wicked boss can be handled. This is how you do that.

1. AVOID RESPONDING IN KIND

The fact you have a boss who’s probably a jerk or gets on your nerve or talks to you rudely doesn’t mean you should do so. Don’t let your boss’ behaviour change yours. Maintain your professionalism at all times; you never know where it could land you someday.

2. LET YOUR WORK SPEAK FOR YOU

Be good at what you do; let your work speak for, and deep down you would earn the respect of that boss, even if he/she doesn’t show it. No boss would want to lose a staff that is good at the job.

3. LEARN FROM EACH EXPERIENCE

Learn from every experience that makes you have an issue with your boss, and try to avoid it next time. It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right or who was at fault; just try to learn from the experience.

4. SEE THE HUMOUR SIDE OF IT

Choose to see your boss’ ‘wickedness’ as something to laugh about or something you can joke about. When you see the funny side of a bad situation, it wouldn’t haunt you anymore. But if you let your boss’ actions eat you up, you will never recover from going down that road.

5. If you think you can’t still cope with your boss, try seeking a transfer to another department, if possible.

6. LISTEN AND LEARN

Maybe your boss’ mode of communication might be wrong, but it could be that your boss is probably passing a message that you aren’t getting. Sometimes, the subordinates are usually at fault, but still refuse to take their share of the blame.

I’ve seen bosses have issues with their employees/subordinates over issues like lateness, discipline, lack of focus, dirtiness, unnecessary chatter etc. In these situations, just try to listen to what your boss is saying and avoid unnecessary drama.

That bad boss is also human; it’s up to you to strategise a means to follow your boss that wouldn’t lead to conflicts.
