5 REASONS YOU GET OVERLOOKED FOR A PROMOTION

sad man at work

Many employees often get overlooked for promotion, and most times it isn’t always because of their abilities, but it’s as a result of certain things they do and some certain things they don’t do.

Have you been held back for promotion while others are being promoted?

It isn’t usually a mistake; there’s always a reason.

1. YOU LACK THE REQUIRED SOFT SKILLS

Most bosses like staffs who are hard-working and who can get the job done, but then, they prefer employees with soft skills like being able to communicate, being able to handle pressure, having a positive attitude and paying attention to details. Qualities like these are rare, and people with these qualities make better leaders and managers. If you lack the required soft skills for a job and possess only the hard skills, you could get overlooked for the job.

2. YOU DON’T PRIORITISE TEAMWORK

Employees who don’t value teamwork, but choose to prioritise self-glory over teamwork and togetherness often get overlooked for promotion. Overzealous staffs more often than not don’t get promoted.

3. YOU FIND IT HARD TO GET ALONG WITH CO-WORKERS

Your relationship with co-workers is as well important. If you are always having a fight with colleagues, involved in drama and can’t get along with your fellow employees, you would always be overlooked for a promotion.

4. YOU EXPECT IT

Many staffs that are expectant of getting promoted often get overlooked, because promotion isn’t something you demand, but something you earn without putting your mind on it.

5. YOU LACK FOCUS

Minus productivity, bosses love staffs who are always focused on their jobs, who know how to use their time effectively, prioritise tasks and meet targets as at when due.

If you lack focus, are poor with time management and always use office hours for personal activities, you might feel it’s little or no one is noticing, but you are wrong and would most likely be overlooked for promotion.

Many employees lack the experience and foundation to become a successful manager, as well as fail to develop the right skills (hard and soft skills) and manage resources effectively; it sums up why they often get overlooked for promotion
