In most societies around the world, it is very common for people to associate ‘gossip’ with women (or women with ‘gossip’, if you like) because it is widely believed that men do not indulge the urge to gossip as easily as women do. However, an enlightening discovery by researchers seems to counter this popular ‘belief’.
According to a study conducted by Onepoll, a global research company, men aren’t just bigger gossips, they even spend more time gossiping, AND (wait for it…) are more likely to expose the dirt about other people than women. Hmmm…quite unbelievable, huh? It’s not even finished… lol.
The study also found that men are happier when gossiping with their colleagues and that their contribution to the ‘chat’ gives them a ‘feel of belonging’.
In the course of the study, which involved 5,000 respondents, it was found that men spend an average of 76 minutes gossiping with their friends while women spend just 52 minutes.
Furthermore, the study revealed that while men prefer to exchange gossip in the office, mostly with their colleagues at work, women prefer to ‘confide in their friends’ while at home.
Male participants in the study pointed out that topics that usually dominate their ‘discussion’ with their male colleagues or friends include women, female colleagues at work, especially the most attractive ones, salaries and their sexual relationships, while the female participants said they were usually interested in other women, family issues, in-laws and celebrities.
While one-third of the male participants said they were usually in their happiest mood when gossiping with their colleagues, 58 per cent said gossiping gave them a sense of belonging while 31 per cent of the men said they preferred chatting with their partners to having sexual relationship.
So, there, you have it, ladies and gents, gossip isn’t something only women do— both genders indulge in it someway, somehow, even though some of us would rather term it ‘discussion’. Lol. But no matter what you want to call it though, the truth remains that we all do it. Now, go on, and gossip about this bit of news to your friends too.
