man working in office

People are always on the lookout for greener pastures, both the employed and the unemployed, so it’s not out of place for one who already has a job to search for another one. However, in conducting the search, it’s necessary to apply wisdom and be as careful as possible— you don’t want your current employer to find out that you’re dissatisfied with him, as the consequences can be dire.

So I’d show you 5 ways to go about searching for a job without pissing anyone off.

1. DON’T CONDUCT YOUR SEARCH IN THE OFFICE, BUT IF YOU HAVE TO, LET IT WAIT UNTIL AFTER WORK

I don’t need to tell you how unprofessional it is to conduct a job search at the office when you’re supposed to be working. It is wrong, and can earn you the sack or worse. Doesn’t matter what attractive position you stumble on while you’re using your office internet, you have no business applying for it at work, let it wait until you get out of your current employer’s office, however if you have to do it at the office, it’s only sensible to wait until the close of work before you send in the application at the office. Do not disrespect or cheat your current employer, give them their due time.

2. STAY PROFESSIONAL

It’s common for some people to lose interest in their current role or job when they want to quit, and this can result in them showing up for work late and leaving a lot earlier than they should or being nonchalant, but don’t fall for this trap, as it can affect you in more ways than you think. Most employers are very observant, a change in your productivity level or attitude towards work can send them the signal that you want to quit, and that can get you the sack. Apart from that, it can affect the negotiation terms in event that you finally resign. Getting good references may also a problem.

3. USE YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL

This is for those who work in an organization where they’re assigned an official email address. On no account should you ever apply for another job with your work (official) email, always use your personal email address. You risk getting sacked by your current employer, and risk not getting hired by your potential employer, as they’d see you as unethical.

4. BE CAREFUL ABOUT CHOOSING YOUR REFERENCES

While choosing who to add as your reference(s), it’s important to think carefully, to avoid costly mistakes. Make sure you only add people who you trust to give positive feedback about you. Unless your current employer is aware of the job search, do not list him, otherwise, you may risk their wrath.

5. ATTEND INTERVIEWS AT THE RIGHT TIME

Most interviews hold during working hours, but try not to attend one when you’re supposed to be working, it’s wrong and unprofessional to. Call your potential employer, to fix a more convenient time or day for you.

So those were the five tips that I think can guide you in your search for another job. I hope you find it helpful.
