FOR THE MEN: 9 THINGS YOU DO THAT’S RUINING YOUR FERTILITY AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW

A man’s sperm health is an important part of his life, but then most men go about their daily lives without being aware of how they are ruining their fertility.

These nine things are dangerous to a man’s fertility:

1. TESTOSTERONE SUPPLEMENTS

Too much of everything they say is bad, and that also goes for testosterone supplements. A lot of men take these pills daily to boost their muscles and body build, but taking this can ruin your sperm health. Too much of it can wreak havoc on the pituitary gland which controls sperm production.

2. STRESS

We know you have to work hard to make that extra cash; we know it’s a fast lane world with a lot of bills to pay. But what you don’t know is that your body is mortal and you weaken it when you expose it to too much stress without taking time to rest. The mental and emotional effects that comes with stress can impede bodily functions, including sperm production. In simpler terms, stress can weaken the effectiveness of your sperm.

3. ALCOHOL

Alcohol should at best be taken minimally. You put your body under stressful situations when you overload it with alcohol. Alcohol has been shown to reduce sperm quality, lower sperm production and cause sperm abnormalities, and lower performance. A study from the British medical journal found that men who had as little as five drinks per week racked up “adverse effects” to their semen quality.

4. HIGH CAFFEINE INTAKE

If you have a high caffeine consumption rate, you need to lower your caffeine intake. A research carried out on Danish men found that sperm count and concentration were slightly reduced in men who had a high soda/caffeine intake. So limit your intake of coffee, energy drinks and soda to keep your sperm health intact.

5. QUIT USE OF HARD DRUGS

Hard drugs are also terrible for your sperm health, and according to Lisa Mazzullo, M.D., co-author of Before Your Pregnancy: A 90-Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception: “Sperm may be damaged by these drugs, and women are more likely to miscarry if their partners use recreational drugs like cocaine, marijuana and any of the other typical amphetamines.”

6. CIGARETTE SMOKING

Cigarette smoking is also bad for your sperm health and can cause low sperm count and slow-moving sperm.

7. LAPTOP

You ought to be wary of putting your laptop directly on your lap, as the heat coming out of the system could have a detrimental effect on your sperm health.

A 2005 study from the Stony Brook found that using a laptop on the lap can elevate the temperature of the scrotum by several degrees.

According to Dr. Dan Williams, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health: “If there’s excessive heat put out by the laptop, excessive heat exposure from the laptop to the testicles may have a detrimental effect.”

8. Excessive heat from Jacuzzis and any form of excessive heat should also be avoided. Any prolonged exposure to heat can have a detrimental effect on your sperm production and quality.

9. EXCESSIVE WEIGHT

It’d be detrimental to your sperm health if you do not keep your weight in check.

According to Dr Williams: “Obesity can affect the male hormones. Testosterone can get converted to estradiol in our peripheral adipose tissue and in men who are overweight there is increased conversion of testosterone to estradiol. That can effect sperm production or the quality of the sperm.”

“The other effect is heat,” said Dr. Williams. “When there’s excess heat around the testes, then that can impair the testicular function.” Excess adipose tissue, he said, acts as insulation and increases heat in the scrotum.
