7 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR EVERYDAY ITEMS

Not everything we buy for use comes with a user manual, so sometimes, we use some of these things without knowing their full operational pattern or the purpose they serve. The extra piece of fabric tucked in either your brand new pair of pants or T-shirt for instance, is there for you to use as a test subject for washing with detergent and machine. Some of us don’t know this, and that’s not all of it. I have 7 other things you may not know about your everyday items.

THE LITTLE HOLE ON THE SIDE OF A PEN

No, it’s not just a design, it serves an important purpose. Without that hole, your pen wouldn’t be completely airtight and as you write, the pressure would fall, preventing the ink from flowing to the tip and eventually, the pen would cease to write although there is still ink in it.

If you’re ever on a highland area, due to the fact that the pressure is lower there, a pen without the hole could explode, and stain your clothing. So the hole serves the purpose of balancing the pressure in your pen to allow it function well.

THE HOLE ON THE CAP OF YOUR PEN

Apart from making sure your pen writes smoothly, and ink doesn’t overflow from the other end due to too much pressure when you cover it with the cap, this hole also serves a precautionary purpose. It is believed that if one accidentally swallowed the cap, the hole would allow for easy breathing, pending when a surgery is performed to remove it.

THE HOLE AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PADLOCK

If you look closely at your padlock, close to the keyhole, you’ll find a smaller hole there. It’s not for fancy. The hole is there to drain water that gets trapped in the padlock, for those exposed to rain. It’s also there so you can add grease/oil to your padlock without stress.

THE PUNT UNDER A WINE BOTTLE

If you noticed, all wine bottles have a little curve underneath, called a punt. The purpose of it is to make sure the bottle doesn’t explode due to pressure, and to keep the wine sparkling.

RED/ BLUE COLOURING ERASERS

Not all erasers are coloured like the same, but for those that come in this design, the whole purpose of it is to tell you which to use for what. The red coloured side is to be used for erasing soft surface papers, while the blue area is for hard surfaces.

A FERRITE

Oh that’s just the name it’s been given, but you’ll probably know it as the bump on the end of your laptop cable. As ugly as the feature makes your cable look, it’s there to prevent interference in the cable.

THE HOLE IN AIRPLANE WINDOWS

Now, if you’ve flown on a plane before and sat close to the window, you’ll notice there is a small hole in the glass covering the windows. Since the windows can’t be opened, the hole is meant to allow little air flow into the plane. It also helps regulate the pressure in the plane.

So now you know what purposes some of the things you use and see every day serve. More will be disclosed to you on this platform.
