Water is essential for our body to function properly and anything from 1.5 litres the 3 litres a day is needed by our body depending on body size and exertion.

Some of the important functions of water include helping flush out toxins and waste products from our body, carrying nutrients around the body, lubricating joints, regulating body temperature and digestion.

So what’s the best way to get the water we really need?

According to Dr Howard Murad, associate clinic professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles in a report published in Daily Mail, eating your water instead of drinking it is good for you. In the report published by Daily Mail, Dr Murad gave reasons why you should eat your water instead of drinking it.

Below are reasons why you should eat water and not drink it

1. IT DEPLETES YOUR BODY OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Drinking too much water can do your body more harm than good. Drinking too much water can actually deplete your body of vitamins and minerals if they are flushed out of the body too quickly.

2. DRINKING TOO MUCH WATER MIGHT AGE US QUICKLY

When you drink too much water, you are not guaranteed it gets into your cells and stays there which means it goes straight into the toilet without doing you any good. This results in puffy eyes, swollen ankles and a bloated stomach which are signs of the body not handling water efficiently. This can lead to aging and also make us feel fat and sluggish.

3. YOUR BODY RETAINS WATER BETTER WHEN YOU EAT WATER

The body retains water better when we get much of our water by eating water-rich foods. Our body absorbs water better and more slowly when we eat water-rich foods because it’s trapped in the structure of these foods and this results in our body retaining the water better.

4. YOU GET A PLUMP, GLOWING SKIN

You should increase your water intake if you desire a plump, glowing skin and eating your water will help you achieve this as your body retains water better when you eat water-rich foods.

5. WATER-RICH FOODS HYDRATES YOUR BODY TWICE AS EFFECTIVELY AS A GLASS OF WATER

If you want to be hydrated better, getting much of your water from water-rich foods should be your goal. According to a research carried out by the University of Aberdeen Medical School, eating fruits and vegetables rich in water hydrates the body twice as effectively as a glass of water.

6. EATING WATER-RICH FOODS HELP SUPPLEMENT NUTRIENTS LOST THROUGH EXERCISE

Eating a water-rich food after exercise is essential as a study by researchers at the University of Aberdeen Medical School found that the natural sugars, protein, mineral salts and vitamins in water-rich fruits and vegetables means they help supplement nutrients lost through exercise.

7. YOU MIGHT LOSE WEIGHT

If you are on a weight-loss program or maybe you are just watching your weight, eating water-rich foods would not just give you the water you need but also keep you fuller for longer. Substituting water-rich foods for high-calorie foods is one effective way of reducing calorie intake and fat from your diet.

Experts also recommend we put the consumption  of water-rich vegetables before fruits because eating too much fruits can push your blood sugar levels up.

Tomatoes, oranges, watermelon, apple, pear, carrot, spinach, grapefruit, blueberries, cucumber and strawberries are some water-rich foods you should consider.
