The liver is one of the most important components of the human body. Among other things, it helps in detoxifying the body, and keeping us alive. Needless to say that any harm or danger to the liver can be translated to danger for human life. We sometimes subject the liver to things that can destroy it without knowing so, that is why I’ve decided to let you in on some of the deadly habits that can damage your liver.

 

1. ALCOHOLISM

You probably already knew this wouldn’t miss out on the list, but then, one can’t ever over flog the danger drinking poses to the liver.

When you drink too much, you reduce the ability of your liver to fight toxins. It can also lead to serious liver conditions like cirrhosis and more.

2. SMOKING

Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs, it’s also terrible on your liver. The chemicals contained in cigarettes cause oxidative stress which leads to the formation of free radicals which are harmful to the liver.

3. OBESITY (AND POOR NUTRITION)

When you eat all the wrong foods, especially fatty foods, you only expose your liver to danger. Fatty foods can lead to obesity, which will stock up your liver with too much fat, leaving it overwhelmed and unable to control the levels of fat and other toxins in your body. Over time, this condition can cause an inflammation of your liver and do serious damage to it.

4. INSUFFICIENT SLEEP

Sleep is meant to give the body enough rest, to recover lost nutrients and get revitalised. When you don’t sleep well, you only expose your body to ill health. That said, a study has also suggested that lack of sleep can lead to oxidative stress on the liver.

5. DRUG ABUSE

Abusing drugs like antidepressants and painkillers can damage your liver too. This is why it’s necessary to follow the doctor’s prescriptions when you use them. Some of these drugs contain chemicals that are very complex and could do damage to your liver.
