man in bed The sperm is highly important for fertility to be assured, and many researchers have gone on to find various things that can either help boost sperm quality or things that can harm it, or things you don’t even have a clue of. Below are 5 findings you probably didn’t know about a man’s sperm:

1. SPERM ALSO NEEDS HELP

Sperm like every other living thing also needs help to do better. According to a research published in the journal Nature, even though sperm are strong little swimmers, they also need help to penetrate the woman’s egg. A burst of the hormone, progesterone in the woman encourages the sperm to wiggle their tail in super motion in order to push through the egg’s protective membrane. Catsper, a protein found in the sperm cells is responsible for receiving signals from the woman’s progesterone hormone.

2. CELL PHONES SHOULD BE FAR FROM THE MAN’S ORGANĀ

According to an Italian research published in the Journal of Andrology, researchers found that the radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) emitted by cell phones can decrease sperm count and as well damage sperm quality. The study found that men who kept their phones in the pockets of their trousers had decreased sperm quality, mobility and concentration when compared to men who didn’t keep their phones in their pocket.

3. WHAT YOU EAT AFFECTS YOUR SPERM

A man’s diet has a big impact on his sperm. According to a study published in the journal Human Reproduction, the researchers found that men who ate more saturated fat, had lower sperm count and concentration, while men who ate foods rich in Omega-3s had better sperm quality.

4. MACHO GUYS DON’T HAVE BETTER SPERM

We all know that one guy who prides in being a macho, and research has shown that women are attracted to men with a good build and deep husky voice. However, those deep voices are a resultant of high testosterone levels which researchers believe can negatively affect sperm production. According to a research published in the journal Plos One, the macho men don’t have better sperm quality than the guys with high-pitched voices; in fact, they have lower sperm concentration than the men with high-pitched voices.

5. A WOMAN’S DIET CAN ALSO AFFECT A MAN’S SPERM QUALITY

Studies have shown that the quality of a man’s sperm even starts in the womb. According to a 2007 study, women who ate lots of beef during pregnancy gave birth to sons with 25% lower sperm count and three times higher risk of fertility problems. Another study even found that men whose mothers smoked during pregnancy had a 40% decrease in sperm count that was mostly irreversible. This is shocking when compared to smoking men who had 15% lower sperm count that’s even reversible. This shows that the mother’s diet is even twice as important as the child’s diet.
