Lefties make a little percentage of the world’s population, with the righties massively overshadowing the left-handed people. But the lefties are unique in their own way, and they are the ones who get all the stares and ‘awwws’ because of their uniqueness.
There are certain facts that have been researched about left-handed people, and they would amaze you, while some would definitely leave you shocked.
1. LEFT-HANDED PEOPLE HAVE LOWER RATES OF ULCER
According to a 2010 study published in Pediatrics, the researchers found that your handedness might determine your health. The researchers have no perfect explanation to give to this but they believe that it boils down to the way the brain is wired.
They found that left-handed people have lower rates of arthritis and ulcer.
2. Lefties make about 10% of the world’s population, and they are twice likely to be a man than a woman. Researchers also estimate that the percentage of left-handers have remained constant for over 30 years now.
3. Left-handed people tend to reach puberty about 4 to 5 months later than the right-handed person.
4. LEFT-HANDED PEOPLE ARE MORE SATISFIED WITH THEIR SEX LIVES
According to a 2014 study, left-handed people tend to be more satisfied with their sex lives than the righties. The researchers surveyed 10,000 people and they found that 85% of lefties were sexually satisfied compared to the meagre 15% of righties who admitted being satisfied with their sex lives.
5. Traditional myths did not seem to favour left-handed people as the left hand signified many negatives in ancient history. An itchy left hand used to indicate you would lose money while an itchy right hand indicated you would receive money.
In witchcraft texts in medieval Europe, left hand was used to harm or curse another person. In Morocco and among the Eskimos, left-handed people were believed to be sorcerers. Even in Jewish and Christian traditions, the benediction must be done with the right hand as it signified the “strong right hand of God”.
6. LEFT-HANDED PEOPLE ARE MORE CREATIVE IN ARTS ESPECIALLY
According to a research published in the American Journal of Psychology, lefties tend to be more creative in arts. The researchers surveyed over 2000 left-handed people, righties and ambidextrous people as well. They found that lefties tend to be better in arts, sports and even music.
7. Research also suggests that lefties tend to be better at multitasking, recover faster from stroke and left-handed college graduates tend to become 26% richer than right-handed graduates.
8. Research also suggests that lefties tend to suffer more from migraines and are more likely to be alcoholics, as well as insomniacs.
9. THEY SPEND LESSER TIME ON QUEUES
Researches show that people tend to be more comfortable in their dominant side. This would make right-handed people join the queue on the right and lefties join the queue on the left — and remember that lefties make only 10% of world population.
10. LEFTIES GET SCARED EASILY
According to a research presented in the annual conference of The British Psychological Society, lefties tend to get scared easily than right-handers. The study participants watched an 8 minutes clip from a scary movie, Silence of the Lambs. When asked to recall scenes from the movie, the lefties made more mistakes and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder more than the right-handers.
11. THEY MAKE BETTER CATWALK MODELS
When it comes to modeling, the lefties seem to be better suited to this. Left-handed models tend to do better at turning left and right compared to right-handed models who would find it more difficult to turn left.
12. LEFTIES HAVE A HIGHER RISK OF PSYCHOSIS
Various researches indicate that people with psychosis were 20% more likely to be left-handed people. Researchers from Yale University and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas found that people with psychosis were even 40% more likely to be lefties.
13. Research also shows that premature babies are more likely to be lefties, and 90% of babies tend to be more comfortable with their right thumb.
14. The Queen Mother as well Prince Charles, Prince William and Queen Elizabeth II of the British royal family are lefties. Also, four of the last five American Presidents are lefties.
15. Examples of great and famous people who are left-handed include: Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Beethoven, Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Tom Cruise, Alexander the Great, Gandhi, Henry Ford, Marilyn Monroe, Celine Dion, John D Rockefeller.
