Being truly happy is a good thing and the desire of everyone on earth, but many people go on to live unhappy lives — both the rich and the poor.

So, what can one do to always remain happy?

1. LOVE YOURSELF

You can’t live a happy life when you can’t love yourself. Stop waiting for people to love you; love yourself — this is probably the first step to living a happy life.

2. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU HAVE

One reason why people are unhappy isn’t because they don’t have enough, but they are focused on what they don’t have and what others have. Be grateful for what you have — that’s how you live a happy life.

3. HAVE A SENSE OF DIRECTION

When you have a plan in life, a sense of what you want and where you are going, you would find life more fulfilling. Have a sense of direction, have goals, know what you want and strive for it. You would live a more organised life when you have a sense of direction.

4. KEEP IMPROVING YOURSELF

You would find life more fulfilling and happiness would never be far from you when you make conscious efforts to improve yourself. Keep improving yourself and you would have this inner joy for every step forward you take in developing yourself.

5. ALWAYS SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

What’s life without those who have a special place in your heart? Family and friends hold a special place in our hearts, and you would have every reason to be happy when you spend quality time with them.

6. FIND TIME FOR LAUGHTER

Laughter is an important part of life and you can never be unhappy when you are laughing. So, always find laughter and you would always be happy.  Hang out often with people who make you laugh, visit places that would put a smile on your face — that’s how you stay happy.

7. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

You only have one body, so you ought to take care of it. You can hardly live a happy life when you don’t even take of yourself.

Eat right, exercise and avoid harmful substances. Take care of your body and find fulfillment in it — you would be happy when you do this.

8. DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS

You would hardly be happy when you compare yourself to others. The grass is hardly ever greener on the other side; what you are seeing might only be a mirage.

Everyone have different lives to live; focus on yours.

9. GET RID OF BAD HABITS

Bad habits would only ruin you and leave you unhappy; get rid of jealousy, greed, envy, quarrelling, unhealthy habits and addictions — they have no good to offer.

10. BE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE WHO VALUE YOU

Don’t force yourself to be friends with people who don’t value you. Be friends with people who value you, and they would give you reasons to be happy.

11. STOP DWELLING ON THE PAST

You can’t move forward if you keep dwelling on the past. The past is past and there is hardly anything you can do to change it. Dwelling on the past would only make you unhappy.

12. DO THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT

Do things you love and things you are passionate about; you would find joy and fulfillment when you do this.

Happiness isn’t a myth; you can actually find true happiness in life.
