Do you see yourself yawning and cannot help it?

Yawning is natural, but there haven’t been a known cause for yawning. However, yawning could also mean your body is sending you a message.

These are the common reasons why you yawn.

1. IT’S A SIGN OF BOREDOM

Research has shown that yawning could be a sign of boredom. A study revealed that a group of college students yawned more when shown a pattern of colours than when shown a 30-minute rock video.

2. IT COOLS DOWN THE BRAIN

Another research has found that an open-mouthed yawn helps cool the brain. It causes the sinus walls to expand and contract like bellows, pumping air onto the brain, which lowers its temperature, the study found.

3. YAWNING IS ALSO CONTAGIOUS

Various researches have found that yawning could be contagious. One particular study found that when shown videos of yawning, around 50% of people started yawning.

4. FATIGUE AND DROWSINESS

Fatigue and drowsiness have also been associated with yawning.

5. SLEEP DISORDER

Sleep disorders or inadequate sleep could also make one yawn during the day. This could be your brain sending you signals that you are tired and need to rest.

Certain medications like pain relievers and antidepressants could also make you to yawn.
