Hello and welcome to this Sunday’s edition of our biweekly relationship column — El Crema Sunday Love Special. You would hardly see a column as practical and insightful as this one.

Today’s topic focuses on beauty and relationship. We all have that friend who has sworn never to have a partner that isn’t good looking. To such a person, the beauty of a person is highly important and probably comes first in choosing a relationship partner.

What’s your take on this? Is beauty really important as far as choosing a partner is concerned?

Drama and Shawn would share their views on this one.

Drama

In as much as beauty is a good ingredient to the overall make-up of a person, I do not think that it is a defining (necessary) one. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I too, like any other man, wouldn’t mind having a beautiful woman as a relationship partner— after all, everyone wants the kind of partner other people would also admire. But then, as you search for a relationship partner, you cannot ignore that there are other (more) significant factors that should precede beauty.

As much as you want to date or marry a good-looking woman, you also have to consider that physical beauty fades at some point. So what will keep you glued to your partner when they’re all wrinkled and old, and the pretty face and great body are no more? So I think that non- physical attraction is a more appropriate factor to put into consideration as you search for a relationship partner. Before you fall for anyone, what is that thing about their personality (behaviour) that you like? — Because in the long run, that is what will keep you around…even when beauty fades.

Non- physical attraction is what builds into love; not beauty. And it is what will keep a couple together. So you just need to find that attractive trait in them. It could be humour, humility or kindness; it could be anything.

And of course, as you consider attraction, you have to think about compatibility as well; because there is no way everyone you’re attracted to will be perfect for you. So you have consider how much the both of you can work out, and once these are worked out, the relationship is guaranteed to be a success. Physical beauty is fine, but not necessary in finding a relationship partner. It is like the icing on a cake, it does make it look good, but has no significance on its taste— without it, the cake still tastes good.

Shawn

I know it’s easy to term beauty as superficial and unimportant as far as relationships are concerned, but somewhere in-between we know that your perceived beauty of your partner is just as much important.

Various researches have found that physical attraction is highly important for a relationship or marriage to be successful. Once the physical attraction starts fading then the relationship would most likely fade along. So this means, how beautiful you perceive your partner to be in the course of the relationship is important if that relationship is going to be successful.

Even when you meet a person newly, your brain is wired to access the person’s looks and this would then determine how your perception and response towards that person would be. If your brain sends signal to you that the person is ugly looking, you might never go on to date that person. And of course, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder; so what’s beautiful to Mr A might not be all that beautiful to Mr B; so this means that our perception of a person’s beauty is what strikes us to take that next step.

For these reasons I mentioned above, I would say that your personal perception of a person’s beauty is important to having a relationship with that person. If you perceive a person to be terribly looking and go on to have a relationship with that person, you might never love that person totally. This is even one of the reasons why a lot of people are ashamed of their partner.

However, inasmuch as I feel beauty is important, it shouldn’t be the cornerstone of that relationship; it shouldn’t be your major or only goal. So many things are more important than beauty; physical attraction might be important but it won’t build understanding in the relationship when mishaps come, neither would it save the relationship from collapse.
