Money is one of the most sought after things on earth; man’s needs centres around money.<\/p>\n

However, one thing couples quarrel about the most is money; when there is a lack of it there would be quarrels, when there is excess of it there would be quarrels, and there would also be quarrels when money is in moderation. Show me a couple that doesn’t have money quarrels and I would show you a couple that’s living in peace.<\/p>\n

It’s quite considered unromantic to talk about money before marriage; but I think it’s important couples know what and where they are heading to so as not to enter the trap of money quarrels unprepared.<\/p>\n

Why do money and finance come in-between couples that even seem so in love?<\/p>\n

1. DIFFERENCE IN SPENDING HABITS <\/b><\/p>\n

We all have different personality traits and it also shows in how we use our money; some are frugal, some are spendthrift, some love to save a lot, others don’t, and this could be a big problem if two people enter marriage unprepared because difference in spending habits have led to the collapse of many marriages. Spending habits are a major reason couples have money disagreements.<\/p>\n

2. OPPORTUNITY COST AND SCALE OF PREFERENCE <\/b><\/p>\n

Opportunity cost and scale of preference are useful economic tools in making purchases in order of relevance and preference, but like I mentioned earlier we all have different personality traits and this in turn can alter the effectiveness of opportunity cost and scale of preference if care isn’t taken. The man might be thinking of getting a new car to help the family transportation, whereas the woman might feel moving into a new house should be the major priority; they are both right in their thinking and this in itself is another major money problem couples face \u2014 placing priorities.<\/p>\n

3. CONTROL<\/b><\/p>\n

Control of financial resources is also another reason couples quarrel about money. If one partner is more interested in making financial decisions in the home than the other, then money quarrels would be a bit less; but when both partners are interested in the financial decisions and they have contrasting views then that’s a big problem that would result in quarrels.<\/p>\n

4. IN A SINGLE INCOME HOUSEHOLD <\/b><\/p>\n

When one partner is the sole bread-winner of the home, especially in the case of the man, he expects to have almost total control of the resources, and this would lead to quarrels if he has a wife that wouldn’t have any of it.<\/p>\n

5. IN THE CASE OF BOTH PARTNERS WORKING <\/b><\/p>\n

Even when both partners earn an income, it could still pose a problem. Partner A might feel partner B doesn\u2019t put enough money into family use and vice versa; this could lead to quarrels also. Appropriation of funds and misappropriation of funds are reasons couples quarrel about money.<\/p>\n

6. KIDS <\/b><\/p>\n

How to and how not to spend on the kids is another reason couples quarrel about money. When couples start having kids, the whole picture changes; their education, their feeding and catering for them become an issue with both partners having different ideologies on what\u2019s right and what isn\u2019t, and how to spend and how not to spend.<\/p>\n

7. DIFFERENCE IN INCOME<\/b><\/p>\n

The difference in income level also accounts for why couples quarrel a lot. If partner A earns more than the B, partner B might expect partner A to do more of the spending while partner A might feel aggrieved that partner B is doing too little. “What do you do with your money?” That’s one question that’s often asked in such a marriage<\/p>\n

8. DEBTS <\/b><\/p>\n

Debts, how to clear debts, when one partner is in the habit of getting into debts, when a partner secretly borrows from family; one sure thing is any couple that have a case of debt would definitely have quarrels about their debts.<\/p>\n

Money quarrels is quite normal in marriages, but if not well handled it can cause bigger problems.<\/p>\n
