WAKING UP SEVERAL TIMES A NIGHT IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR MOOD

How you sleep every night can have a big impact on your mood, a new study claims.

A new study out of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore claims that waking up several times a night is more likely to put you in a bad mood than a shorter amount of sleep without interruption.

The researchers studied 62 healthy men and women and had their mood assessed over three consecutive days.

Patrick Finan, lead author and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore explained: “When your sleep is disrupted throughout the night, you don’t have the opportunity to progress through the sleep stages to get the amount of slow-wave sleep that is key to the feeling of restoration.”

The researchers noted that sleep disturbance is harmful to positive mood.

The research was published in the Nov. 1 issue of the journal Sleep.
