THE DOS AND DON’TS OF ORAL HYGIENE

Having a good oral hygiene is important for having a healthy teeth and gum.

It’s really important you maintain a good oral hygiene because gum disease has now being linked to serious health problems including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Here are the dos and don’ts of oral hygiene according to a report by dentists published in the Daily Mail

1. FLOSSING

A recent report claims there is no strong evidence that flossing makes any difference to oral hygiene compared with brushing with toothpaste. Many dentists and hygienists disagree about the report. So when it comes to flossing, do what you think is best for you.

2. RINSING WITH COCONUT OIL (COCONUT OIL PULLING)

Many rinse with coconut oil because they believe it is a natural way to reduce bacteria in the mouth. The truth is there are no scientific studies to support the benefits of using coconut oil pulling. Dentists claim coconut oil pulling is nonsense and there is no substitute for brushing the teeth.

3. BRUSH BEFORE OR AFTER BREAKFAST?

Do you brush before or after breakfast? Brushing immediately after eating is wrong because your enamel is soft immediately after eating. Avoid brushing after meals. Brush before breakfast.

4. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU BRUSH?

Dentists in the UK advice you brush twice daily for two minutes. A study published in the International Dental Journal in 2013 found that brushing for two minutes was better than brushing for 40 seconds.

5. BRUSHING AFTER MEALS

Brushing immediately after meals is wrong as your enamel is soft. Dentists advice you wait at least an hour after eating or drinking to ensure the enamel has hardened before you brush.

6. WHEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE A TOOTHBRUSH?

Using a toothbrush for a long time is wrong as it leads to build-up of bacteria from your mouth in the bristles. Dentists suggest you change your toothbrush every three months. It’s also recommended you store your toothbrush in a clean, dry place and not on the side of a washbasin.
