THE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT CORSETS AND WAIST TRAINERS

Ever since weight loss became an obsession for people, especially women, researchers have gone the extra length to discover and provide effective and less stressful solutions to achieving the perfect body shape (figure). I mean, but that’s the essence of technology, right? — to make all things as easy as ABC. From slimming teas, to surgery, to workout tools…even dieting, but  shedding weight never really seemed a feat achievable without much effort until corsets or waist trainers (waisters, as they’re fondly called these days) came into the picture.

But corsets or waisters, as you know them today, aren’t really new. During the 1800s, they were the means of shedding weight, but with time, they became phased out. People resorted to the aforementioned options to shedding weight, until recently (well, not so recently) when curiosity seems to have resurrected the trend. With celebrities like Kim and Khloe Kardashian leading the way, more women are embracing waisters as the most effective way to shed weight, and get the hourglass figure women crave so badly. But are waisters (corsets) everything they tell you they are?

“How can this possibly be healthy?!” ER physician Dr. Travis Stork exclaims while trying to squeeze into a corset on stage.

The doc also adds that by constricting the midsection of the body, you could potentially harm the major internal organs that reside in that region.

“When you press those inward, what can’t happen? Your diaphragm, which allows your lungs to expand and contract, can’t do its job,” he says. What this means is that corsets can damage the lungs if care and caution isn’t taken.

Apart from the potential danger they pose to the lungs experts say corsets can also cause other medical problems like constipation. This is because when worn overtime, they compress the stomach, and make it difficult for food to pass through as smoothly as it should, so digestion can become an issue. Ribs can be broken, and due to the compressed diaphragm, breathing can become an issue, so you may experience fainting frequently.

There are also those who believe that in the real sense, corsets do not really help one lose weight. They seemingly serve that purpose only as long as you keep using them. According to Dr Sunil Sharma of university of Florida Health Jacksonville, by wearing a corset, “all you’re doing is compressing your stomach and pushing the fat around instead of getting rid of it. It’s a very temporary thing,”… “Would you be able to obtain fat loss after taking it off? I doubt it”

So, ladies, with this little bit of information regarding corsets, I hope you make the right decision for yourself. Corsets may be appealing, but they can be potentially dangerous for your health. Besides, as experts have said, they don’t offer a more permanent solution to your weight issues. Personally, I think exercising is the best, provided you follow the right diet. If you feel you must use a waister, however, be careful. Do not eat with it, exercise with it, or engage in anything strenuous to avoid damage to your health.
