PROCESSED MEAT MAY AFFECT MALE FERTILITY

Can I get the attention of every man out there? Now I have your attention, please read this important information if you consume processed meat (most men actually consume processed meat, anyway).

Your favourite meat might just be affecting your fertility according to a this study.

Please don’t ask why because the study researchers can’t prove why at the moment but they are certain processed meat could be a problem for your fertility because their research shows that men involved in fertility treatment who ate a lot of processed meat had poorer success when compared to those who ate more of chicken or other poultry.

“This study suggests that the type of meat a man consumes may influence his sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg,” said Dr Rebecca Sokol, president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, in a society news release.

The study which is published in Fertility & Sterility was carried out by a team whose head is Dr Wei Xia, of the Harvard T. H Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

To arrive at this conclusion, the study team tracked outcomes for 141 men from couples undergoing IVF at Massachusetts General Hospital. The men provided information about their diet including total meat intake and the types of meat they ate.

The study found that the fertilization rate was 78% for men who ate the most poultry compared to 65% for men who ate the least poultry.

And the fertilization rate for IVF without ICSI was 82 percent for men who ate the least processed meat compared to 54 percent for men who ate more processed meat.

While some experts believe the study can’t prove a direct link between certain meats and male fertility, others believe more research is needed to focus on the biological mechanisms that might cause a high level of processed-meat intake to lower men’s fertility.

So would you decrease your processed meat intake?
