OVERSHARING YOUR RELATIONSHIP ON SOCIAL MEDIA MIGHT ACTUALLY MAKE IT LAST MORE

We all have that one person that always annoys us because of how frequently they share things about their relationship on Facebook. As annoying as it may be to you, those couples are actually doing what would make their relationship last more.

A study conducted by researchers from University of Wisconsin-Madison found that people who boast about their relationship on social media – Facebook specifically, are more likely to stay together.

To conduct the study, the researchers analysed 180 graduates in relationships, initially asking them questions on their level of commitment and length of their relationship.

The researchers then told them to log onto Facebook to see if they had changed their relationship status or if they posted pictures of their partner.

The researchers also asked them how many times they had written on each other’s, and the number of mutual friends they share.

Surprisingly, six months later, when the researchers checked on them to know if they’re still dating, it was those who shared their relationship details on Facebook that were more likely to be together.

The researchers explained that by sharing their relationship on social media, they have increased the bond in the relationship.

They wrote: “These publicly posted cues likely induced participants to perceive themselves as part of a romantic unit, thus cementing the relationship.”
