A Harvard study have challenged the belief that reducing fat intake helps cut weight. The researchers claim that there is no evidence to support belief that people should reduce the amount of fat in their diet when trying to lose weight.
The research team lead by Dr Deirdre Tobias worked with data from 68,000 adults.
The Harvard University researchers believe that health officials should give simple guidance focused on portion sizes and unprocessed foods instead of focusing on fat, carbohydrates and proteins.
The Harvard team found that cutting back on fat was a less effective route to weight loss than low-carbohydrate or Mediterranean diets.
The research was published in respected medical journal Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
