DOES FLIRTING COUNT AS CHEATING?

Hello everyone, hope you’re having a beautiful Sunday? Welcome to today’s edition of our wonderful column — the Elcrema Sunday Love Special; a segment dedicated to diverse issues and situations we find in our relationships.

Today’s topic is on flirting; do you think it’s okay to flirt? Or do you think it should count as cheating?

Drama and Shawn would share their opinion on this dicey but interesting topic?

Drama

Well, I think it does. Unknown to many people, cheating goes beyond what it is known to be. Cheating is a very broad subject, and it doesn’t just begin or end at sleeping with someone who isn’t your partner. You can cheat on your partner emotionally. This can occur when you begin to seek companionship from another person other than your partner— spending more time with them, and giving them the same privileges as you would your partner.

Emotional cheating can also occur in the form of flirting with another person apart from your partner, and I think it is important that we first of all, differentiate between flirting with someone, and giving them a compliment because I believe there are people who flirt without really knowing it.

A compliment is an honest admiration for someone or something, without a hidden agenda underneath it. Like telling someone (of the same or opposite sex) they’re nice— and it ends there; nothing more to it. Flirting, on the other hand is making moves that are suggestive of courtship at someone; like giving them a compliment or saying something that somehow suggests you like them and want something more than just friendship. When a man tells a lady, ‘you’re really nice, and I think you’ll make a good wife (or your boyfriend is lucky to have you)’, he’s not giving her a compliment, rather, he’s flirting with her because there’s a hidden message in the compliment. From my definition, you can tell that it involves more than just giving a suggestive compliment — winking at the opposite sex, whispering into their ears and the lot also counts as flirting.

Now, if the flirt was single, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but otherwise, I think it is not okay because it’s disrespectful to your partner, and it would hurt their feelings if they knew about it.

I know that some people are going to disagree with my stance, but any honest person would agree with me. Flirting is a form of cheating that can bear the same repercussions as sexual cheating, so, I think that married and dating couples need to understand this and know to always draw the line.
