9 HABITS THAT CAN RUIN YOUR REPUTATION

bad reputation

As there are habits that can win you people’s respect, there are also habits that would ruin your reputation among your peers, family, neighborhood, in your workplace and everywhere you go.

When you have a soiled reputation, your name becomes associated with ridicule and you lose people’s respect.

There are some characters you should be wary of, and these characters can put your reputation at risk.

1. JEALOUSY

Jealousy is a trait that would ruin your reputation and make people trust you less. People perceive jealousy as wicked and deceitful, and anyone with such character is viewed in the same vein.

2. BEING HYPOCRITICAL

Living a two-faced life is an example of a hypocrite, and this would definitely ruin your reputation. If you say one thing and act in another way, you lose people’s trust in you.

3. LYING

Being a liar is a quick way to lose your reputation. When people perceive you to be a liar, they lose trust in you and also find it difficult to believe you even when you’re saying the truth. Someone who’s in the habit of lying would easily lose people’s regard.

4. GOSSIPING

Gossiping is another habit that would ruin your reputation. A person who gossips is never liked by anyone and such a person can’t be trusted. A gossip won’t keep a secret, a gossip would waste your time with unnecessary chatter and a gossip can talk behind your back too. Anyone with this trait would definitely not have a good reputation.

5. BEING PROMISCUOUS

Promiscuity is another trait that could make you lose your reputation. If you’re perceived to be loose sexually, people would definitely castigate you and your reputation would be ruined. No one loves a person that has numerous sexual partners.

6. TRASH TALKING

Talking bad about someone behind their back says more about your kind of person. When you do this to two or more persons, you build a bad reputation for yourself. People can’t trust a trash talker — someone that always has bad things to say about people and never sees the good in anything.

7. BEING JUDGMENTAL

No one loves a person who is quick to judge everyone else but themselves. A judgmental person is never loved; such a person is seen as harsh, unfair and being unnecessarily critical.

8. AN INCESSANT TALKER

Except you are a stand-up comedian, you shouldn’t be seen as an incessant talker. A talkative hardly ever has a good reputation; people would see you as a joke and take you less serious, and so many others would even see you as irritating and annoying.

9. ANXIETY

Anxiety can make you have a bad reputation. I know you might be wondering why anxiety should be placed among these other habits.

A study conducted by researchers from Northwestern University which was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that the feeling of anxiety can lead to unethical behaviours.

The researchers conducted the research on 63 participants and made them calm, nervous or full of anxiety through music. After participating in simple tasks, the researchers discovered that the anxious participants were more likely to cheat. The researchers suggest that anxiety increases threat perception thereby leading to unethical behaviours.

Not that anxiety is a bad trait in itself but it can make you do things which people would perceive as unethical, thereby making you lose your reputation. Most of the aforementioned habits are born out of anxiety.

So if you want to have your reputation intact, these habits should be far from you.
