8 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT MENSTRUATION

PERIOD COVER

Menstruation is one of the least discussed subjects out there, reason being because some people consider it a little ‘too weird’ to talk about. But no matter how much we try to evade it, we cannot deny the fact that menstruation is a core part of every woman out there, and there are countless women (especially, younger ones) who have little knowledge of menstruation, and may have one or two questions about some of the changes it often causes to the female system. This is why we, at Elcrema have thought it important to come up with this post; a list of some the major facts (common and uncommon) that are associated with menstruation, and an answer to some of the questions you may have about it. I hope you do find it educative.

1. IT INCREASES YOUR SEX DRIVE

If you’re a woman, you’ve probably noticed that you get hornier, and crave sex the most whenever it is that time of the month. Well, the reason why this happens is because during menstruation, the female body produces less progesterone; a hormone that helps keeps your sex drive in check by lowering your libido. Menstruation affects its production in the body, and makes it difficult for you to contain your yearning for sex.

2. IT MAY TRIGGER SLIGHT CHANGES IN YOUR VOICE

Menstruation is not really a good experience for women because of the pain and discomfort that usually accompanies it. So it is not unusual to see women speak with a bit of anger in their voice during the period of menstruation. This change is not entirely voluntary, per se, rather it’s just an uncontrollable reaction to the discomfort and pain they feel.

3. PREGNANCY CAN STILL OCCUR DURING MENSTRUATION

Contrary to popular belief that a woman cannot take in during menstruation, pregnancy can actually occur during this period because semen can live for up to one week. So since sperm can survive in your body for up to one week, if you ovulate just after your period finishes, conception can occur from sex that occurred during your period. For women that do not have a strict 28 – 32 day menstrual cycle, falling pregnant during their period is easier.

4. YOUR PERIOD CONTAINS MORE THAN JUST BLOOD

The menstrual cycle is designed to help prepare a woman’s body for pregnancy by building up the lining of the uterus; however, in the event that no egg is fertilized by a sperm, the thickened lining of the uterus is shed through the vagina with some blood, and that is what you get as your period.

If you’ve ever compared blood from other parts of your body with what comes out of your vagina during your cycle, you’d have noticed the difference between the two.

5. YOU BECOME LESS ATTRACTIVE TO MEN DURING YOUR PERIOD

A man’s testosterone levels are directly affected by a woman’s scent, which changes during a menstruation.

One study where men sniffed the T-shirts of women who were ovulating showed the men’s testosterone levels spike, while testosterone decreased when they sniffed T-shirts of women who weren’t ovulating.

Another study showed that strippers make twice as much in tips when they’re ovulating than when they’re on their period.

6. YOU THINK MORE LIKE A MAN DURING YOUR PERIOD

Due to a reduction in estrogen levels in women during menstruation, there can be an enhancement of their ‘male cognitive skills’, thereby giving them a temporary cognitive advantage in areas such as spatial thinking.

7. YOU MAY GET SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY IN BUILD UP TO YOUR MENSTRUATION

Bloating, irritability, fluid retention, acne etc…are some of the many symptoms you are likely to experience in the build up to your menstruation; which are the exact symptoms that are associated with pregnancy. The reason for this is because your body is programmed to mimic the same symptoms in pregnancy during your period.

8. YOU NEED BODY FAT TO MENSTRUATE

If your body fat plummets below 8-12%, your period will abruptly cease, if it ever began at all. Fat cells are correlated with a woman’s estrogen levels and are thus necessary in both menstruation and procreation.
