7 DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA YOU SHOULD BE WARY OF

Guy using computer

Social media have come to stay, and the impact it has had in communication and information has been tremendous. But it also has its cons, and if you aren’t too careful, you might be caught up in its cons.

These are some social media cons you should be wary of.

1. DISTRACTION

Knowing when to use and when to stay away from social media is good thing, because there are lots of distracting and engaging contents on social media that can while away your time and you’d end up being distracted from the thing that you ought to have done.

2. COULD CHANGE YOUR PRIORITIES

You should be careful with your social media approach, because it’s a network — an open network of many people with diverse ideologies sharing their lives in one space. Your approach to social media can cause you to care about the wrong things that might not even add value to your life at the end of the day. The distractions revealed in the first point could cause you lose focus and even change your priorities — and you need to be careful about that.

3. COMPARISONS

Probably, a bulk of your friends are on social media, and they all share a part of their lives on it. Some might have glamorous lives that will make you live in comparisons and make you wish you were them. This can kill your self-esteem if you aren’t careful.

4. BITTERNESS

The comparison which is explained above could leave you with bitterness, if you aren’t careful. You’d no longer be proud of yourself, neither will you appreciate what’s going on in your life — and bitterness might gradually become envy if you aren’t careful.

5. EMPHASIS ON THE WRONG THINGS

Getting more friends on your list, having more followers, wanting a large number of people to like your posts and updates and trying to be the centre of attraction are some of those things many people do on social media. These things are so irrelevant but social media usage could make you identify with them and then you lose value of what really matters and focus more on what doesn’t.

6. VALIDATION

Wanting people to admire you, wanting people to be more aware of you — all these are seeking validation, and are signs that you want to be accepted. Seeking validation online is dangerous, and it’s you giving outsiders the chance to determine your worth.

7. OVERSHARING

There should be a line between what you can share and what you cannot share on social media. When you overshare your personal life and what should be private, you endanger yourself in many ways. Inasmuch as social media provides the platform to share your life, there should be set boundaries.

Social media has its pros and cons, depending on how you use it. So be careful and not let its cons catch up with you.
