6 REASONS YOU SHOULDN’T USE SELFIES TO BOOST YOUR SELF-ESTEEM

Selfie

Not too long ago, selfies weren’t in anyone’s dictionary, but phones with front camera, Kim Kardashian and Instagram had a joint effort in making selfies one of the most popular acts in this social media age.

The bad thing about selfie taking really is that a lot of people use it to serve as a boost to their self-esteem, and this is very wrong in all fronts. To these people, every like on social media is highly important and they take selfies as serious business.

I’d share six reasons why you shouldn’t belong in this category.

1. YOU HAVE A BETTER DEFINITION OF YOUR BEAUTY

When you get so addicted to selfie taking and social media, your judgement of beauty might become clouded and you might tend to put superficial things over what really matters. Also, you might get to lose the sense of the beauty that comes from within.

2. YOU WOULDN’T NEED PEOPLE’S LIKES AND COMMENTS TO DETERMINE HOW BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE

A lot of selfie takers on social media today need people’s likes and comments on various social media platforms to ascertain their beauty and boost their esteem as well, and this is a huge danger that comes with social media and taking selfies. It’s a huge risk to depend on what people have to say to boost your confidence, because you could risk losing it in the long run — the social media isn’t always friendly. People might even get tired of your selfies and throw shades at you for no reason, and if you put too much interest in what they say, you would get hurt for no reason.

3. YOU WOULD BE LESS OFFENDED BY PEOPLE’S NEGATIVITY

This goes in line with the previous tip; if you use people’s comments and reaction on social media to boost your esteem then you risk getting hurt someday. However, if you care less about what people say, you would be less offended by their negativity — the social media could be quite an awful place.

4. IT’S ONLY A SHORT TERM BOOST

The feeling of esteem that comes with people’s acceptance of your selfies on social media is only a short-term one — it never lasts long. With this, you would need to keep uploading more pictures to gain people’s approval, and this would last only short-term.

5. YOU HAVE A BETTER ATTITUDE

With selfie addiction, you tend to easily get worried about what people would say and this would give people control over your mood, reactions and perception.

6. YOU COULD LOSE A SENSE OF THE REAL WORLD

With filters and photoshopping the order of the day in the selfie world, you could actually lose what it means to be original if care isn’t taken. Having this frenzy of taking the perfect selfie every now and then can make you lose sight of originality.

Rather than use selfies as a boost to your self-esteem, see the beauty in selfie taking; see it as fun, see it as exciting — but it should never really be taken that serious.
