1. MIKE ASHLEY

Sports Direct founder and Newcastle united owner Mike Ashley, 49 is worth £3.7 billion but never went to the university. He left grammar school aged 16 to play county level squash but an injury turned him from athlete to businessman.

2. RICHARD BRANSON

Richard Branson, 64 is worth £2.7 billion and he never went to the university. He started his own business aged 16. He began selling records through his magazine – ironically called The Student – raking in sales by undercutting high street store prices. He launched Virgin records in 1972 aged just 21 from a country estate in Oxfordshire.

LAWRENCE GRAFF

3. LAWRENCE GRAFF

Lawrence Graff, 76 is worth £2.8 billion and he made his billions supplying jewellery and jewels to wealthy customers outside the UK. He started as a 15-year-old apprentice at a Hatton Garde jewellery stop. He started making his own designs after the shop went out of business and by the mid-1970s had began sourcing gems for clients in the middle east.

Philip Green, 62 is worth £3.1 billion and he started his fashion empire as an O-level school leaver. He started by importing jeans from Asia to sell in London.

JOHN CAUDWELL

5. JOHN CAUDWELL

John Caudwell, 61 is worth £1.7 billion and he left school aged only 16. He started an apprenticeship at a tyre factory before moving on to sell used cars. He entered the mobile phone business when he established Midland mobile phones later renamed Phones4U which he later sold for £1.5 billion in 2006.
