5 BARRIERS THAT ARE KEEPING YOU FROM BEING HAPPY

sad woman

Happiness is a genuine feeling that can’t really be quantified; what it does to the way you feel cannot be explained. Everyone seeks happiness, but many find themselves being unhappy more often than not — both the rich and the poor.

So what then are the barriers keeping one from being happy, that even one can’t solve?

1. HEDONIC ADAPTATION

There’s a thing psychologists refer to as hedonic adaptation. It’s how we quickly and efficiently adapt to the changes in our environment, either good or bad, and this is a major roadblock to happiness. This is why you badly feel the need to have a spouse, and you believe it would make you happy, but then when this happens, hedonic adaptation steps in and after a few months you become used to what you have and you are back to being unhappy.

2. LACK OF FOCUS

When you have a goal and you are focused on achieving it, you would find yourself being happy about it, even when you haven’t achieved that goal yet. But another roadblock to unhappiness is lack of focus, distraction and loss of concentration. Your mind would hardly ever be at rest when you aren’t efficient as you ought to be and when you let things distract you from your goal, and this would make you unhappy.

3. LACK OF LOVE

By lack of love, it isn’t really having someone to love and be loved in return that makes you happy or unhappy, it’s not having love in your heart — love for yourself and love for others.

4. FEAR

Fear is a major roadblock to happiness. Have you seen a person living in fear and being happy? You can’t live in fear and have a happy life. Fear is a negative emotion and brings negative energy along, like depression, irritability, tenseness and all these would make you unhappy.

5. PURPOSE IN LIFE

When you have a purpose, a goal, something that drives you, a burning hunger and a passion, your energy would be channeled towards that purpose, and this would give you a sense of direction. But when there isn’t a sense of direction, you would easily be blown by the wind of unhappiness.

Being unhappy isn’t really as a result of what you have and what you don’t have, it’s more about what you do with your life, finding fulfillment and letting your mind be at peace.
