No matter what you think, being happy is a choice; a lot of people think they need to have a lot of money before they can be truly happy. But guess what? There are a lot of rich people who aren’t really happy.

The simple things in life like cherishing your family can make you happy, while little things can also hinder you from being happy.

Below are some little things you do that hinder you from being happy.

1. EXPECTING SOMEONE TO MAKE YOU HAPPY

Happiness should come from within. Waiting or relying on someone to be your source of happiness is a risky way to live — this would definitely leave you more unhappy than happy. A lot of people think that they need to be in a relationship or get married before their happiness can be guaranteed. Having such mentality would make you unhappy.

2. NOT TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF

If you eat well, exercise, maintain a good hygiene and take proper care of yourself, you would most likely be happy. However, when you care less about yourself, there is no way on earth you can live a happy life. That self-consciousness that you are putting in efforts to keep yourself in good condition is enough to make you happy.

3. YOU QUARREL EASILY AND KEEP GRUDGES

Grudges and quarrelling go hand in hand; they are like Siamese twins. People who quarrel easily also keep grudges a lot. These two negative habits show that you harbour hate in your heart, and you can never live a happy life if you harbour hate in your heart.

4. YOU COMPARE TO OTHERS

When you use other people’s lives to mirror yours then you have set yourself on the path to remain unhappy for the rest of your life. You cannot live a happy life when you compare yourself to others — it never works that way. If you live like this, it would make you feel that you aren’t good enough and that would make you unhappy.

5. LIVING IN THE PAST

Your past could either be successful or unsuccessful. Whether you have a successful past or a terrible one, it doesn’t matter; what matters most are your today and your future. Living in the past would only make you unhappy — it’s a sign that you haven’t moved on.

6. LIVING A SOLITARY LIFE

No man is an island; the world wasn’t built that way. Cutting off everyone from your life would make you unhappy. Learn to connect with people and learn to laugh more if you want to be happy.

7. LETTING PEOPLE MAKE YOU FEEL INFERIOR

Letting people bully you around and having a low self-esteem would make you live a life of unhappiness.

8. FOCUSING MORE ON YOUR NEGATIVES

You can’t live a happy life if all you do is focus on the negative things that has happened to you; this would leave you feeling unhappy. Focus more on the positives and you would live a better life.

9. Believing negative things people who don’t know you tell you about yourself is another habit that can make you unhappy. People would always talk, and many people are only there to say negative things. Some people look for the slightest excuse to criticise; don’t let such people spoil your shine — they don’t know you, so don’t let them have a say in your life.

10. PUTTING EFFORTS IN MEANINGLESS RELATIONSHIPS

A lot of people remain unhappy because of the relationships they keep. Not every relationship is a good relationship, and being in such relationship would make you unhappy.

Also, some people suffer in relationships because they put in meaningless efforts to keep someone who doesn’t even want them. Such a relationship would leave you unhappy.

11. NOT KNOWING WHO YOU ARE   

If you don’t define yourself and know your values, people would do that for you. And if people define you, they would give you the wrong definition of yourself. This would make you live an unhappy life.
