Oftentimes, a lot of us just dabble into marriage without actually doing the necessary background work to ensure marital success. A lot of us get married because we think we are ripe enough age wise, or because our friends are all getting taken, and we ‘don’t wanna be left out’. These are amongst the reasons marriages fail today.

Before you get married, you need to sit down, and ask yourself some very important questions. If the answers return positive, then, you are ready, otherwise, you’re not.

Here are 5 important questions to ask before marriage.

DO I LOVE THIS PERSON?

Love is important, and cannot ever be overrated when it comes to marriage. While attraction may bring you together, love will bind you together. You have to also be sure what you feel isn’t mere infatuation because it’s easy to confuse the two. Love lasts very long, infatuation doesn’t.

DOES YOUR PARTNER LOVE YOU?

Okay, so maybe you’re sure about how you feel for them, and it’s certain you love them, but it’s not enough, don’t forget. It’s marriage, and it must be reciprocated equally. How do you know they love you? Are they willing to make sacrifices for you? Do they want to make you happy? How much of you is missed in your absence?

DO YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR PARTNER?

You can be in a relationship with someone without knowing them well enough. Love sometimes makes you too excited to think straight. But this is marriage, there’s little or no margin for error. You must understand and know your partner well enough before marriage enters the picture. What do they look like? What do they think like? How can you please them? What gets them angry easily? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Can you handle these things? The question of how much you know them allows you know if or not you’re compatible.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED TO THAT PERSON?

There has to be a reason you want to take that relationship to the marriage level. Don’t tell me it’s because you love him/her; that could change tomorrow. So what is it? Children? Companionship? Because you are getting ‘too old’? Knowing why would help you know if it’ll work or not.

DO THEY WANT TO MARRY YOU?

It’s possible to love someone so much, and not want to marry them. It could be because you’re not ready mentally or you just don’t see the need for the ritual. So as you think of your own readiness, consider your partner’s.
